Eugene M. Hughes
Interim President from
July 2001 to September 2001

Eugene M. Hughes came out of retirement, after 42 years in higher education, to become Eastern's interim president until a permanent president was found. He wasn't looking for work, but took a liking to Eastern's campus and community and decided to take the job until November at the latest.

Hughes brought to Eastern not only a fresh face with new ideas, but also an impressive resume. He was president at both Northern Arizona University and Wichita State University before retiring, both of which faced the same kind of budget cutbacks that Eastern was facing.

The Board of Regents was able to fill the position of president earlier than expected and Dr. Hughes term officially ended September 30, 2001.
